As a musician, understanding musical terms is crucial because we have to interpret the composer’s intention written in their own composition. And this is part of the music theory

Italian Terms

 

  1. a – at, to, by, for, in the style of

  2. a niente – dying away

  3. a tempo – in time

  4. ad libitum, ad lib. – at choice, freely

  5. accelerando (or accel.) – gradually getting faster

  6. Adagietto – rather slow (quicker than Adagio)

  7. Adagio – slow

  8. affettuoso – tenderly

  9. affrettando – hurrying

  10. agitato – agitated

  11. alla breve – with a minim beat

  12. alla marcia – in the style of march

  13. allargando – broadening (getting slower and louder)

  14. allegretto – fairly fast (slower than allegro)

  15. allegro – fast (allegro assai: very fast)

  16. amabile – amiable, pleasant

  17. andante – at a medium (walking) speed

  18. andantino – Slightly faster than andante

  19. anima – soul, spirit (con anima: with spirit)

  20. animando – becoming lively

  21. animato – Animated, lively

  22. appassionato – with passion

  23. assai – very

  24. attacca – go straight on

  26. cantabile – in a singing style
